I’m always glad to see an action camera that is different in design and adds new features, apart from the ones we already know. So I was quite surprised to see Andoer AN300 to offer a flip screen on the backside. This could be a great camera for vlogging when you want to film yourself and check the framing. Still you got all the benefits from an action cam, like a waterproof case. I already reviewed an Andoer camera, the real 4K Andoer C5 Pro. C5 is pretty similar compared to Thieye T5 and Firefly 8S, but was released already before them! Even tough the specs of Andoer AN300 are not as good, the flip screen is a nice feature and the price is attractive – let’s take a closer look:

Andoer AN300

Andoer AN300

Andoer AN300 Specs

Image Sensor:
Andoer AN300 features a 12 MP Sony IMX078 sensor, same model used in many action cameras such as Firefly 7SEKEN H8 or Elephone Explorer.
Unfortunately it’s not the 12 MP IMX117 used in GoPro Hero4, Andoer C5 Pro or SJCAM SJ7 Star, that would have made AN300 even more interesting.

Chipset:
Due to the Novatek 96660 chipset, also known from many other action cams, real 4K is not available, only interpolated 4K.

Lens:
Andoer AN300 offers a 170° wide angle lens, similar as many action cameras. The wide angle is a characteristic of action cameras but for vlogging the fisheye effect might be disturbing. There is a field of view selection in the menu, more on that later.

Video Resolution:

  • “4K” – 2880 x 2160 – 24fps (interpolated)
  • 2K – 2304 x 1296 – 30fps
  • 1080p – 60 / 30 fps
  • 720p – 120 / 60 / 30 fps

4K resolution is not real, and not even 16:9. Since the name 4K refers to the horizontal pixels, the cam isn’t even 3K.

Image Stabilization:
Unfortunately image stabilisation is not available, another downside of this camera.

Recording Format:
The videos are recorded in .mp4 files with .h264 codec.

Photo Resolution:
Several photo resolutions are available to select from. Remember the cam has a 12 MP sensor, so any setting above is interpolated.

  • 16MP – 4608 x 3456
  • 14MP – 4320 x 3240
  • 12MP – 4032 x 3024
  • 10MP – 3648 x 2736
  • 8MP – 3264 x 2448
  • 5MP – 2594 x 1944
  • 3MP – 2048 x 1536
  • VGA – 640 x 480

Display:
Here comes the USP of this camera: a 2″ 320 x 240 px LCD screen on the backside that can be rotated 180°. Additionally the AN300 offers a small 0.96″ screen to display the current settings.

Battery:
Battery is stated with 1350mAh, thats quite large in capacity compared to most action cameras. GoPro’s batteries are smaller in capacity.

Storage:
microSD card, up to 64 GB are supported, class 10 recommended.

Connectivity & Ports:
The camera offers wifi to connect with App or remote controller.
Andoer AN300 offers a micro USB port which does not support an external microphone – would have been nice for a vlog camera. Additionally there’s a micro HDMI port for digital video output.

Dimension & Weight:
65 x 40 x 25mm; weight: 71g

Included Accessories:
Another nice gimmick: Andoer AN300 doesn’t come in a cardboard box, it comes already in a bag for the camera. Included accessories are waterproof case (30m water resistant), remote controller with wristband, base plate with strap, bicycle bar mount, battery, cable & manual.

All the buttons are located on the top of the camera: power button, which is also used as mode switch button. A wifi button that is used to scroll the menu and the shutter. On one side you will find the ports: micro USB and micro HDMI, on the other side theres the battery door which also covers the micro SD card slot. On the bottom of the camera you’ll find a 1/4″ standard photo thread to mount the camera on any photo gear, e.g. a selfie stick.

Demo Video

Conclusion

Even though the camera has some “4K” stickers on it, it’s clearly not a 4K camera. Not only the offered “4K resolution” is available with a max. of 24fps, furthermore it’s in 4:3 format and not 16:9 – so actually less than 3K. Nevertheless if you don’t need 4K it is still a decent 1080p full HD camera. Marco’s demo video looks nice and comparable with similar action cameras such as the Firefly 7S.

The flipscreen is a nice feature which might be interesting for vloggers. Personally I’m not a big fan of using an action camera as a vlog camera, when talking into the camera a lot. The fisheye effect creates a strange looking face when you’re holding it too close. But still if you need a rugged camera for your other shots you might want to bare that fact. You got the option to select a narrower FOV which makes the whole image look less fisheye, but remember it’s a zoom-in so the distortion doesn’t go away. There are action cams available offering 90° angle lenses (like Firefly) which show less distortion. Another downside of the Andoer AN300 is the fact it uses a micro USB port and therefore the use of an external microphone is not possible. That feature is attractive for vlogging to get a better sound while talking.

The flip screen is nice and unique, but Andoer AN300 has some other flaws, so you might want to check again which of them are more important to you:
