Similar to the YI Action Camera, there is also a YI 4K Chinese Version and an International Version. In this article I want to show the differences and how to handle this camera.
On the front side of the packaging you can see that the title is written in English vs Chinese. On top of the International Version you can see a small sticker saying that there is no microSD card included. Even tough the sticker is missing on YI 4K Chinese Version, there is also no microSD card included. The content is the same: Camera, Battery, USB <-> microUSB cable & manual (in English vs Chinese).
Also the description on the bottom of the camera is in English for the International Version, the Chinese Version in Chinese respectively.
The YI 4K itself is the same. There were differences between the versions of YI Action Camera (The international version has no notch on the bottom, the battery door shows an metallic sheet & has a Sony battery). Just the language of the description on the bottom sticker is different.
The most important part is of course the language on the screen. YI 4K Chinese Version has a Chinese menu interface due to its installed Firmware.
On YI Technology’s website there are currently 2 FW Versions available for download Chinese and English.
So I downloaded the English Version and tried to upload it onto the camera:
First the camera asked me in Chinese if I want to update the Firmware. After pressing yes (left button), an Error Massage appears: “Verification failure”.
But I read about a trick. Rename the firmware to “firmware_force.bin” then you can install it.
You will get an error message – this time in English – “Illegal Version”. You can still take photos and videos as well as change settings in an English menu. But this message comes up every time and it is very annoying and delays each selection. It makes it pretty hard to use the camera.
On a side note: It is possible to install the Chinese Version on an International Version of YI 4K Action Camera.
The error message disappeared with Firmware Version 1.3.3, but came back with Firmware 1.4.0 and later! So:
Firmware 1.3.3 is currently the only one not showing error messages!
If you want a later firmware because of the features, you can install it, but you have to live with the error message. As mentioned above, the cam will work anyway.
