The SJ8000 didn’t get much attention, but when looking at the specs it seems to match other current cameras like SJ5000x elite and Elephone Explorer Pro – the price tag might be a litte cheaper!

SJ8000 Specs:

Image Sensor:
The camera features the 12 MP Sony IMX078 Exmor sensor. There are reports / product descriptions the Sony IMX117 is used (that would be the sensor of the GoPro Hero 4), but this sensor won’t work with the chipset! The Sony IMX078 sensor is also used in the very similar SJ5000x elite and Elephone Explorer Pro, as well as in the Firefly 6S.

Chipset:
Novatek 96660 chip is used for the SJ8000, that’s the same used in Git2SJ5000x elite and Firefly 6S.

Lens:
The SJ8000 offers 170° wide angle which is the same for most action cameras currently.
Focus range is 12cm to infinity.

Video Resolution & Frame Rate:

  • 4K – max. 24fps
  • 2K – max. 30fps
  • 1080p – max. 60fps
  • 720p – max. 120fps

4K image is interpolated. (Same with SJ5000X elite, Firefly 6S, EKEN H9, Git2,…) Only GoPro Hero 4 and Sony FDR-X1000 feature native 4K resolution!

Recording Format:
The videos are recorded in .mov files with .h264 codec.

Photo Resolution & Format:
Image resolution up to 16 MP (4608 x 3456) is available; .jpg Format

Display:
The SJ8000 offers a 2″ live view LCD display.

Battery:
A detachable 900 mAh battery is used, same capacity as the SJCAMs, Git2 is a little larger (950 mAh), the Firefly 6S offers the highest capacity (1600 mAh)

Storage:
MicroSD cards up to 64GB are supported, class 10 is recommended.

Connectivity & Ports:
The camera offers wifi for wireless remote via iOS or Android App (YOUMERA or FINALCAM App),
a USB port for charging and A/V output, (not sure if mic-in is possible, “Microphone” is listed as special feature).
and a microHDMI port for HD video output.

Dimension & Weight:
59 x 28 x 41 cm / 2.32 x 1.10 x 1.61 inches;
65g (with batteries)

Accessories included:
As many other cameras the SJ8000 comes with lots of accessories included such as: 30m Waterproof Case, Base Mount, Long Screw, Quick Release J-Shaped Base Mount, Housing Backdoor with Holes, Bike Handlebar Seatpost Pole Mount, Curved & Flat Adhesive Mount, 2 Short Connectors with Short Screw, Long Connector with Short Screw, 1/4 inch Camera Tripod Mount, Tripod Mount Adapter, Backpack Clip, Cleaning Cloth, Velcro Strap, Buckle Strap, USB Cable (0.9m Length) & AC Adapter.

Features

SJ8000 Menu

SJ8000 Menu

When looking at the menu the camera offers the same features & settings as similar cameras such as time-lapse, motion detection and several image settings such as ISO, white balance & exposure.
There is an option TV mode which lets you select PAL / NTSC, but as I noticed at the Git2 the frame rate might not be change to 25fps (and a multiple of that)

Special Features:
There is a feature called “Anti-shake”, not sure if it is a built-in gyro or a software solution.
The camera offers auto power on/off and loop recording so it could be used as DVR dash cam and it lets you select the loop time which is set for many other cameras.
A HDR mode is offered as well.

The camera is available in 8 different colors.

Conclusion

It seems that this camera is the same as the SJCAM SJ5000x Elite, Elephone Explorer Pro or Blackview Hero3; just with a different branding. Despite the fact that the design is a little different, there is still the same number of buttons which are also on the same spot. Nevertheless the brand is important when it comes to Apps (Updates and features) as well as firmware updates!

Still some open issues, I hope I can get some more information soon.
