SJ4000+

SJCAM just released a new camera, the SJ4000+ or SJ4000 plus. I want to give a short overview and compare it with the SJ5000+.

As this question often arises: the official SJCAM models are: SJ4000, SJ4000+ SJ5000 and SJ5000+. The 4000 & 5000 model are offered with and without wifi; the plus models come with wifi.
There are SJ6000 or even SJ7000 models available for sale, but are not from SJCAM!

SJ4000+ Specs:

Image Sensor:
The SJ4000+ comes with a 4MP OmnisVision OV4689 sensor,
that is a larger one compared to the 3MP Aptina 0330 used in the SJ4000, but smaller than the 16MP Panasonic sensor used in the SJ5000+.

Chipset:
Novatek 96660 chip is used which is from the same brand as the SJ4000 chip (a Novatek NTK96655).
The SJ5000+ uses an Ambarella A7LS chip, same one used in the Xiaomi Yi.

Lens:
Unfortunately I couldn’t get all data for the SJ4000+. For the SJ4000+ and SJ5000+ 170° are stated, the SJ5000+ lens has a f2,8 aperture, which I expect to be the same for the SJ4000+. Focus range is 12cm to infinite.

Video Resolution:

  • 2K – max. 30fps
  • 1080p – max. 60fps
  • 720p – max. 120fps

Now that’s very surprising as the SJ5000+ can do 1080p 60fps max. Frame rates and resolutions are same as for the Xiaomi Yi.

Recording Format:
The videos are recorded in .mp4 files with .h264 codec.

Photo Resolution & Format:
max. 12MP (4032 x 3024 px); .jpg

Display:
Both cameras (Sj4000+ & SJ5000+) offer a 1,5″ TFT display. But I couldn’t find out if the share the same resolution. The SJ5000+ offers 960×240 dots.

Battery:
The SJ4000+ uses the same battery as the other models by SJCAM with a capacity of 900 mAh, which is quite low compared to the Xiaomi Yi (1040 mAh) and the GoPro Hero 4 (1160 mAh), considering the power consumption for the display.

Storage:
A microsSD card is used and up to 32GB are supported.

Connectivity & Ports:
The camera offers wifi for wireless remote, a USB 2.0 port for charging and A/V output and a HDMI port for HD video output.

Special Feature:
The SJ4000+ was updated and now offers built-in gyro, same as the SJ5000X Elite

Dimension & Weight:
59 x 41 x 30 mm; 63g
So it is the same size as the other SJCAM models.

Accessories included:
As for all SJCAM models they come with a huge accessory pack including: several base plates, bike mount, underwater case, clips, helmet mount and many more; basically all you need for an action camera.

Price:

That’s about 20 USD less than the SJ5000+ model (Banggood: 159 USD)

Conclusion

It seems like the only differences between the SJ4000+ and the SJ5000+ are the sensor and the chipset. Surprisingly the Sj4000+ offers a resolution up to 2K which might be available for the SJ5000+ with a newer firmware.
This results in a lower price for the SJ4000+, so if you want to save some $ that might be the right camera for you.
