New GoPro HERO launched!

Already confirmed on GoPro’s website, the new GoPro HERO launched! CEO Nick Woodman already announced this type of camera beginning this year. It is a basic camera using the same sensor as in GoPro Hero5 Session but the same exterior design as both the Hero5 Black and Hero6 Black. Therefore it will features a 2″ touchscreen and a removable battery. In contrast it won’t feature 4K video recording but therefore will be available with the same price tag as Hero5 Session. Here are the specs in detail to compare:

New GoPro HERO Specs

Accessories

It seems GoPro Hero comes with the same accessories as GoPro Hero6 and Hero5 black: The Frame, Rechargeable Battery, Curved Adhesive Mount, Flat Adhesive Mount, Mounting Buckle (Quick Connector), USB-C Cable and Manual.
Update: There’s a major bummer: The new GoPro Hero will not be compatible with Karma, nor will it have mic-in via USB-C Adapter!

New GoPro Hero Features

Also the features of the new GoPro Hero seem to be the same as Hero5 black. So the main difference will be: smaller sensor (in terms of max. resolution), no 4K & 2.7K recording and no RAW photo option. I’m not sure about the GPS module currently. Here’s the list of features, maybe you spot another difference:

  • 2-Inch Touch Screen: Quickly switch between modes, frame the perfect shot and check out your footage on the 2-inch touch screen.
  • Waterproof + Durable: Built tough and waterproof down to 33ft (10m), HERO goes where your smartphone can’t to capture every adventure with no worries.
  • Voice Control : Control your HERO hands-free with simple voice commands like “GoPro, start recording” and “GoPro, take a photo.”
  • Wi-Fi + Bluetooth® : Connect to the GoPro app to control your camera remotely, check out your shots and share your favorites on the spot.
  • Auto Offload to Your Phone: Your photos and videos move to the GoPro app automatically so you can share the moment, in the moment.
  • QuikStories Enabled: HERO automatically sends your footage to the GoPro app where it transforms into a beautifully edited video with music and effects.
  • Auto Cloud Backup: With a GoPro Plus subscription, you can automatically back up unlimited photos and up to 35 hours of video to the cloud.
  • Full HD Video + High-Quality Photos: HERO captures stunning 1440p and 1080p video plus 10MP photos of all your adventures.
  • Video Stabilization: HERO records smooth, stabilized video whether you’re shooting by hand or using a GoPro mount.
  • Simple One-Button Control: Never miss an awesome moment. A single press of the shutter button powers on your HERO and starts recording automatically.
  • Compatible With GoPro Accessories: Wear it. Mount it. Love it. With 30+ accessories available, you can get unique perspectives and capture your life in a creative new way.
  • Fast-Charging Ready: With the Supercharger power adapter (sold separately), you can charge up fast and get back out there.

Price

The new GoPro Hero (2018) is already available, Price is the same as for GoPro Hero5 Session which is 199 USD:

Conclusion

Basically GoPro gives you a new entry level option. Currently the lowest priced GoPro is Hero5 Session at 199 USD. It is small but therefore doesn’t offer a touchscreen, which is a convenient component to change settings, frame your shot and check out the footage. For the same price you can now go for the new GoPro Hero that offers this feature plus the convenience of a removable battery if you sacrifice on 4K recording. Great to see that this time GoPro’s approach is a camera that uses the same accessories as their “bigger brothers”. The first entry level GoPro Hero, released in 2014, couldn’t be removed from its case and therefore wasn’t compatible with some Hero4 accessories back then.

Still 199 USD is not cheap to join the GoPro family when compared to e.g. Xiaomi Mijia Action Camera. For 99 USD Mijia offers 4K video recording, RAW photo, Video stabilization, a larger touchscreen and longer battery life. On the downside it is not waterproof without case and doesn’t have fancy features like voice control.
