Elephone Rexso Explorer K

Elephone just released a new action camera which marks also their first camera offering real 4K resolution: Elephone Rexso Explorer K. It is equipped with image stabilisation that works in 4K, a 16 MP Panasonic sensor and offers .h265 codec. Let’s take a look at the specs and its competition:

Sensor:
Elephone Rexso Explorer K holds a 16 MP Panasonic MN34120 sensor. The Panasonic Sensors got quit popular recently. The 14 MP version is used in the recently released EKEN H6s as well as MGCOOL Explorer 3 camera.

Processor:
Explorer K holds a HiSilicon HI3559 processor from Huawei.

Video Resolution & Frame Rate:

  • 4K  – (3840 x 2160) – 30 fps
  • 1080p – (1920 x 1080) – 60 / 30 fps
  • 720p – (1280 x 720) – 120 fps

It is stated that all options in 4K and 1080p feature electronic image stabilization (EIS). I’m not sure if it is possible to tun it off. We also see that on many EKEN models that offer EIS and doesn’t allow to switch it off. It’s not always beneficial to turn on EIS.

Video Format:
According to their website the new Elephone Rexso Explorer K will feature .h265 and .h264 codec. .h265 is the new version which allows better compression, hence lower file sizes with the same amount of video.

Image Stabilisation
Electronic image stabilisation (EIS) is available in 4K resolution, only a few cameras offer that e.g. EKEN H6s, YI 4K+ and GoPro Hero6 black.
Image stabilisation is supported by a 6-axis gyro sensor that collects the data of the camera movement.

Photo:
Max. photo resolution is 16 MP which equals the 16 MP sensor. Available format is .jpg – RAW is not available.

Display:
Compared to several other recently introduced cameras, Elephone Explorer K will not feature a touchscreen. On the backside of the cam there will be a 2″ live view screen and menu will be controlled by the camera’s 3 buttons.

Battery:
The exchangeable battery got a capacity of 1200mAh which lasts for 90 min. video recording in 1080p. The battery is a bit larger in capacity compared to MGCOOL Explorer cameras.

Storage:
microSD card support for cards up to 128GB; Class 10 is recommended for HD, class U3 for 4K video.

Connectivity & Ports:
Wifi
You can connect Elephone Rexso Explorer K camera to “Explore K” App (available for iOS and Android).

Ports
On the side of the camera you’ll find mini USB & microHDMI port.
That’s interesting news! The use of an external microphone is not available with micro USB (as used in Explorer 2C) but with mini USB it would be possible. Although I don’t have confirmation currently.

Dimensions & Weight:
Weight: 64.5 g;
Dimensions: 59 x 41 x 21.3 mm.

Accessories:
Elephone Rexso Explorer K comes with underwater case, bicycle mount, several adapters for mounting, wires, USB-cable and manual.

Competition & Conclusion

Which are the competitors of Elephone Rexso Explorer K?

  • Price is currently a little under 100 USD and that’s about the same price as new Xiaomi Mijia Action Camera which offers not only a larger screen but also a touchscreen, longer battery life, RAW photo and higher frame rates in HD. In contrast it lacks image stabilisation in 4K and the photo resolution is lower (but available in RAW).
  • Also EKEN H6s and MGCOOL Explorer 3 seem to be close in Specs and price.

So for almost the same price you can get Xiaomi Mijia, which I think is better by the specs. Moreover Xiaomi already released several firmware versions since the camera’s release improving the capabilities of their camera, so you see constant improvement. Therefore I probably won’t test this camera.

Retailer / Price Comparison

Be aware when ordering the camera. Elephone Rexso Explorer K is the real 4K action camera. The cheaper Elephone Rexso X only features interpolated 4K as well as the Elephone Rexso Dual!
