New action cameras will be released soon which target professional users and offer interchangeable lenses. In this article I’ll take a look at the Black Magic Micro Cinema Camera and the Z Camera:

The BMCC is available since July 2015.

Resolutions & Framerates:

  • 4K – not available
  • HD 1080p at max. 60fps (with rolling shutter / 30fps global shutter)

Recording Format, Bitrate & Dynamic Range:
You can either record in CinemaDNG RAW with up to 65 MB/s or with Apple’s ProRes 422 HQ.
The BMCC offers a dynamic range of 13 stops.

Dimension:
W: 8,25cm H: 6,53cm D: 6,96cm (GoPro Hero4 black: 5,9 x 4,1 x 2,1 cm)
The dimension are of course without lens and without battery which will add up on the backside of the camera.

Lens & Focus:
The camera offers an active Micro Four Third mount. Remote focus control is available via expansion connector when using compatible lenses. Iris can be controlled via Rewind and Forward buttons, plus remote control via expansion connector when using compatible lenses.

Connectivity & Ports:
The BMCC offers a HDMI port, 3,5mm audio input, an USB 2.0 port and an extension port. This port can be used for power and LANC input and offers 1x S.Bus channel input, 4x PWM channel input, Genlock input and Composite video output. Through this port you can remote control the camera’s lens, recording parameters and record trigger via LANC and PWM or S.Bus remote channels.
No wireless connections such as wifi, bluetooth or NFC are mentioned.

Storage Type:
SDXC and SDHC cards

Mounts & Accessories:
The camera offers one 1/4″ tripod mount on top and three 1/4″ threads at the bottom. I haven’t found out if there is or will be an underwater case.

Battery:
The BMCC utilizes Canon LP-E6 batteries and a battery life of 1h 30min. is specified. The camera can also be operated via power port.

Price:
The camera will be available for 995 USD.

This camera is currently available through a Kickstarter Campaign, so they are working on the first batch of the serial production camera. The Z Camera will offer 4K resolution:

Resolutions & Framerates

  • Cinema 4K (4096×2160) at 24fps
  • UHD (3840×2160) at 30fps
  • HD 1080p at max. 60fps
  • 720p at max. 120fps

Recording Format, Bitrate & Dynamic Range:
The camera records up to 60MB/s in mov format and .h264 codec.
In normal mode the dynamic range is above 10 stops and they are working on a wide dynamic range mode.

Dimension:
W: 7,52cm H: 5,61cm D: 5,03cm (GoPro Hero4 black: 5,9 x 4,1 x 2,1 cm)
The dimension are of course without lens; It seems that the battery is removable and internal. The body is made out of magnesium alloy and the cam weights 209g with battery and 167g without.

Lens & Focus:
Same as for the Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera the Z Camera E1 offers a Micro Four Third mount. The camera has an active mount and allows for continuous autofocus in both photos and video (with AF lens). The camera also offers an on-screen zoom preview to focus manually. The autofocus measures by contrast.

Connectivity & Ports:
iOS and Android are already available in the Apple App Store and Google Play. These apps provide users the ability to control, live stream and manage content via their Wi-Fi or Bluetooth 4.0-enabled devices.

The camera offers a HDMI port and supports live stream output up to 1080p60.
There is also a 3,5mm jack for external microphones.
Additionally there is a serial port to control the camera.

Storage Type:
MicroSD card up to 128 GB

Mounts & Accessories:
The camera offers a 1/4″ tripod mount and the company says they might release a underwater case.

LCD screen:
On the backside of the camera there is a 320×240 pixel LCD screen.

Battery:
There are 2 2000mAh batteries included but I couldn’t find out if both can be used at the same time. They are removable and provide 45min working time in 4K resolution with wifi turned on (80min. when turned off). The camera can also be powered externally.

Price:
Currently the camera is available via the Kickstarter Campaign. Sales price will be 699 USD.
